Opening Night at the Symphony: Fantasy and Fire

Creative Replies

October 20, 2012, 8:00 p.m.

Ruby Diamond Concert Hall

Yaniv Dinur, Conductor

Frank Kowalsky, Clarinet

Shostakovich         Tahiti Trot ("Tea for Two")
Copland                 Clarinet Concerto
Shostakovich         Symphony No. 5

The pieces on this program were each written in response to a request or challenge: Shostakovich orchestrated the famous song "Tea for Two" (or "Tahiti Tro") in just 45 minutes after being dared by a colleague; Copland's lyric and jazz- influenced Clarinet Concerto was commissioned by the legendary swing musician Benny Goodman; and Shostakovich's dramatic 5th Symphony was written after Stalin had denounced the composer's work, causing him to subtitle the Symphony "A Soviet Artist's Practical Creative Reply to Just Criticism." Conductor Yaniv Dinur will lead the TSO in this evening of brilliant and creative replies.

Pictures Perfect

January 19, 2013, 8:00 p.m.
Ruby Diamond Concert Hall
Matthew Kraemer, Conductor

Read Gainsford, Piano

Kabalevsky               Overture to Colas Breugnon, Op. 24

Beethoven                 Piano Concerto No. 4
Mussorgsky/Ravel    Pictures at an Exhibition

Matthew Kraemer will conduct the TSO in this blockbuster evening of favorites.  Beethoven's beloved 4th Piano Concerto was the last the composer—because of his advancing deafness—was able to debut himself.  Its intimacy and lyricism are the perfect foil to Mussorgsky's vivid depiction of a stroll through an exhibition of artwork by his recently deceased friend, Viktor Hartmann.  Mussorgsky's "Pictures" is a virtual tour de force of orchestral color and the perfect compliment to Tallahassee's chromatic January days.

Mutual Admiration

March 9, 2013, 8:00 p.m.
Ruby Diamond Concert Hall

Jacomo Bairos, Conductor

Corinne Stillwell, Violin

Gregory Sauer, Cello

Schoenberg     Three Movements from American Symphony
Brahms           Concerto for Violin and Cello, Op. 102 in A Minor

Prokofiev         Selections from Romeo and Juliet Suites 1 & 2

This program, conducted by Jacomo Bairos, highlights themes of love and admiration. Brahms nurtured a lifelong friendship with the great violinist Joseph Joachim and wrote many works for him, including the unprecedented 'Double Concerto,' which is not only a meaningful dialogue between two friends (violin and cello), but a true collaboration of soloists and orchestra.  Prokofiev's famous Romeo and Juliet Suites borrow from his own ballet score, which vividly depicts the story of the star-crossed lovers.

"Mutual Admiration" is generously sponsored by Six Pillars Financial Advisors.
